DIY: Egg Carton Seed Planter

Helotes Henhouse DIY

So you’ve eaten all your Helotes Henhouse eggs…don’t throw your carton in the trash! Did you know your egg carton can be repurposed as a seed starter?

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cut the egg carton in half.

  2. Poke holes or cut slits in the bottom of each egg cup for drainage. You can use scissors, a skewer, or the lid from the carton.

  3. Fill each egg cup with potting soil, leaving about half an inch of space at the top. You can also mix in a quarter of used coffee grounds for every three-quarters of soil.

  4. Plant seeds or seedlings in each egg cup, following the plant's instructions. You can put two or three seeds in each hole, making sure they don't touch.

  5. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.

  6. Spray the soil with water until it's moist but not soaking.

  7. Place the egg carton in a warm, sunny location, like on a tray or windowsill. You can also put it in a plastic bag to keep it warm while the seeds germinate.

  8. Water the seeds daily, or as directed on the seed packet, and keep the soil moist.

  9. Once the seeds sprout, you can remove the plastic bag and move the carton to a warmer spot until the plants are ready to be planted outside.
